- Visually: drawing a normal plot to show what area is our probability or what cutoff time corresponds to a percentile
For example, in part a, our goal was to find the percent of people in the men’s group who finished in 4948 seconds or slower. I would include a figure like below with explanation “The red line represents the time of 4948 seconds, and we are looking for the blue area, which represents the probability of finishing in 4948 seconds or slower.”
- Verbally: Saying a statement about the goal of the problem and the conclusion
- For example, in part a, our goal was to find the percent of people in the men’s group who finished in 4948 seconds or slower. I would say: “We are calculating the probability that someone in the men’s group finished in 4948 seconds or greater than that. Then we convert to percentage.”
- Written: writing out the math is also helpful!
- For example, in part a, our goal was to find the percent of people in the men’s group who finished in 4948 seconds or slower. I would write: \(P(X > 4948) = ?\).
- In part c and d, I would use math to show that we are looking for a value \(k\) that completes the following statement \(P(X > k ) = 0.10\) (for part d)
